Canada has two official languages: English and French. English is the most commonly spoken language in most provinces and territories.

Eligibility

Free classes are available to permanent residents and protected persons.

Programs Offered

- LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada)
- CLIC (Cours de langue pour les immigrants au Canada – French version)

How to Enroll

- Visit a newcomer support organization for a language assessment.
- Register for classes based on your assessment.
- Begin attending classes.

Taught by qualified teachers.
Flexible locations: online, schools, colleges, community centers.
Flexible schedules: full-time, part-time, evenings, weekends.
Learn about housing, banking, citizenship, job search, etc.
Some locations offer childcare, transportation, and special needs support.

Class Standards:

- Based on Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) for English and NCLC for French.
- Completion of CLB level 4 or higher in speaking and listening can be used to meet the citizenship language requirement.

 Types of Classes

- General language classes: basic, intermediate, advanced.
- Literacy-focused classes for those with reading/writing challenges.
- Job-specific language training (available in some areas).

- You must undergo a language assessment to determine your current level.
- Local newcomer organizations can guide you through the process and available options.
