Canada’s Official Languages

- Canada has two official languages: English and French.
- English is dominant in most provinces and territories.
- French is primarily spoken in Quebec, and parts of Ontario, New Brunswick, and Manitoba.
- Francophone communities exist across all provinces and territories.

Importance of Language Skills

Strong English or French skills help newcomers:
- Find employment
- Attend school
- Access services
- Support their children’s education
- Integrate socially
- Apply for Canadian citizenship

Newcomers are encouraged to improve their language skills before arriving and after settling in Canada. Knowing both languages can be an advantage in many regions.

Resources

The Language Portal of Canada offers tools and resources to improve language skills.

Language Skills for Work

The language level required for immigration may not be sufficient for employment in your field. Most regulated professions require:
- Fluency in English or French
- Knowledge of workplace-specific language
- Understanding of Canadian expressions and terminology

Newcomers should:
- Check language requirements for their profession
- Contact regulatory bodies for testing details
- Consider language classes or bridging programs that combine language and work experience

Language Classes

- Funded by federal, provincial, and territorial governments
- Private classes are also available (at cost)
- To find programs:
    - Contact newcomer support organizations
    - Visit provincial/territorial newcomer websites

 Language Assessment

Before registering for classes, newcomers must:
- Visit a language assessment centre
- Take a test to determine their current language level

 Language Tests and Certificates

Language proficiency may be required for:
- Employment
- Admission to universities or colleges
- Accepted English tests:

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program)
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

Accepted French tests:
- TEF (Test d’évaluation de français)
- DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française)

Certificates from these tests are widely recognized and can be obtained through government or private testing centres.
